I was talking to someone about how wack the iTunes 10 icon was, but didn’t really care since my macbook still had the iTunes 9 icon in the dock. Then, as if the Mac gods (Steve Jobs?) heard me, the iTunes icon on my dock changed to the new iTunes 10 icon.
I thought to myself, “Well, maybe I’ll get used to it.”
No, I did not get used to it.
After a couple of weeks of this hellspawn on my dock, I’ve come to the conclusion that the iTunes 10 icon is complete donkey ass. Here’s some of the problems I have with it:
1) Completely generic
You might have noticed, that the new icon is a music note inside of a circular orb. Other Apple software icons (Address Book, Dashboard, old iTunes logo, etc) have a more unique, detailed, and thoughtful icon. The new iTunes icon is a frickin’ music note inside a orb, with a gradient background in the orb. Look at your dock, then look at the iTunes 10 icon. Notice the difference in creativity/suck?
2) Lost of brand identity
The old iTunes had been around for a long time (2002 [sic]). When a product’s logo is updated, its usually with slight chances/tweaks at a time, not a complete revamp [for the worst] at once. You’re throwing out something that was familiar with the consumer with something that most with agree is generic and a step backwards in terms of brand management.
3) Hard to notice on the dock
This is the thing that irks me the most about the new logo/icon. The main function of new iTunes logo design is to be visible as a icon in the dock and desktop. I noticed I now have to semi-consciously search for the icon when I want to open iTunes. Maybe it’s because I was so used to the old icon. Or maybe it’s because I don’t notice dog crap.
I understand that old icon was outdated, in terms of the relevance of CDs. But to completely do a sudden and radical revamp to the logo that people grown to know is a big middle finger to the people who actually use iTunes.
To conclude: Die iTunes 10 icon. Just go away and die.
Sidenote: I also hate a bunch of the GUI changes in iTunes 10. You can read about some of the GUI changes that annoys me at http://blogs.computerworld.com/16879/fixing_itunes_10_interface_issues
